Fluxus Box!

Title: The Magician's Puzzle Box
Materials: Wood, watercolor, glue, wire, hinges, music box

Artist Statement

I designed the box and objects to show the themes of hope in a time of war. Many times people see war and think of awful things like explosions, the lives killed, and the families broken up but there's an important factor in war that is often overlooked. Often times, there is still a small hope that things will go back to how they were before. The box shows a simultaneously colorful yet plain outside like it's being saved for something important, but yet on the inside, the objects are beautiful and shiny and colorful but yet there are small details or the hidden meanings that show that they are not all good or that something has happened. Upon further inspection, the flower looks beautiful from the top but if you turn it over, there are smaller petals that are grey and dead and covered in red drops, the weapon is beautifully painted in gold and silver but yet it can cause so much hurt, and the feathers are colorful and sparkling with glitter but yet where is the animal they came from?

Notes

The names of the movies I chose were Howl's Moving Castle and The Magicians Elephant. To build my box, my dad helped me cut the pieces to size and make the grooves to slide the sides into place and then I glued everything together. I then taped off the sections to be able to paint both on the top and on the inside. I added the doors so that they swung open and a knob on the top so the top section is easier to open.

Gregor's Room!

Title: Gregors's Room
Materials: Paper and water

Reflection statement:

The three sculptures visually communicate how I view Gregor's room looks like after reading "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka.
While exploring the materials to build the sculptures, I wanted to focus on color and also the construction of the things I was trying to make because I wanted to try to show how I viewed the room as I was reading. I decided to include Gregor's box spring, bed frame, mattress. pillow, blanket, lamp, table and Gregor himself. I felt the work was lacking in the the bed frame because I had a hard time thinking of a creative way to make a bed frame to both stick with the circular theme I saw in Gregors room and that
would be able to hold the weight of everything else.
I want to keep exploring new ways of making art that even though they may be hard and bothersome to try to figure out how to do, its important you learn and try your best to complete it the best you know how and as creatively as you can. I want to learn more about paper maché like ways of making things with or without glue. This piece allowed me to explore when given a thing to stick to like in the future when I have a client, that its important to stick to it and to try your best to get it done. The making of this work exposed new ideas such as making something with a circular theme and exploring fun ways to spread colors and to add color to other things.

Make it roll!

Material: Thread, wood, glue

Title: Raindrop Canopy
Material: Wood, paper, tape

Reflection Statement:
The three sculptures visually communicate focus point, negative space, and repetition.

While exploring the materials to build the sculptures, I wanted to focus on the colors and the use of wood and string in many of my sculptures because I wanted to try to convey something that shows both the elements we had to cover and that is interesting to look at and causes people to ask curious questions to themselves and to others. I decided to include string, glue, wood, and paper in all if not most of my sculptures. I felt the work was lacking in any invention or to create something new so I used a lot of stands if you will, to life things in an captivating image to look at.

I want to keep exploring trying to create new things that are both interesting to and for me and for other people. I want to learn more about using materials for things I had not use them for before this class. This piece allowed me to explore new techniques with thread and new ways of thinking how to create an effective sculpture. The making of this work exposed new ideas such as using color to convey a theme or emotional in a piece of art and to use color itself in a new way and how to use string to create a sort of a wrapping.
