Fluxus Box!

Title: The Magician's Puzzle Box
Materials: Wood, watercolor, glue, wire, hinges, music box

Artist Statement

I designed the box and objects to show the themes of hope in a time of war. Many times people see war and think of awful things like explosions, the lives killed, and the families broken up but there's an important factor in war that is often overlooked. Often times, there is still a small hope that things will go back to how they were before. The box shows a simultaneously colorful yet plain outside like it's being saved for something important, but yet on the inside, the objects are beautiful and shiny and colorful but yet there are small details or the hidden meanings that show that they are not all good or that something has happened. Upon further inspection, the flower looks beautiful from the top but if you turn it over, there are smaller petals that are grey and dead and covered in red drops, the weapon is beautifully painted in gold and silver but yet it can cause so much hurt, and the feathers are colorful and sparkling with glitter but yet where is the animal they came from?

Notes

The names of the movies I chose were Howl's Moving Castle and The Magicians Elephant. To build my box, my dad helped me cut the pieces to size and make the grooves to slide the sides into place and then I glued everything together. I then taped off the sections to be able to paint both on the top and on the inside. I added the doors so that they swung open and a knob on the top so the top section is easier to open.
